While Nothing has not officially disclosed details about the upcoming smartphone, recent leaks indicate that the company, led by Carl Pei, is working on its third handset. Notably, the recently launched Nothing Phone 2 in India suggests that the speculated model is unlikely to be the Nothing Phone 3. Following the product cycle pattern of the UK-based OEM, it is anticipated that the next flagship model will be unveiled around July of the following year. Consequently, the presumed third Nothing smartphone is expected to be a more affordable variant, possibly named Nothing Phone 2a.

Tipster Abhishek Yadav (@yabhishekhd) shared information on Twitter that a Nothing smartphone with the model number A142 has been identified on the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) website. This model number aligns with the rumored Nothing Phone 2a, reportedly carrying the model number AIN142.

While the minor difference in model numbers could be attributed to regional variances or internal identifiers, a report by 91Mobiles suggests that the listing also reveals a battery with the model number NT03, expected to be the battery for the Nothing Phone 2a. This battery could potentially differ in size from those featured in Phone 1 and Phone 2.

The Nothing Phone 2a is anticipated to be a more cost-effective version of the Nothing Phone 2, featuring scaled-down hardware. Previous leaks suggest the Phone 2a might sport a 6.7-inch AMOLED display. The 91Mobiles report hints that the reduced price may result in the absence of an LTPO panel, with the phone potentially housing a mid-range Snapdragon or MediaTek Dimensity chipset.

An earlier leak showcased a design render of the speculated Nothing Phone 2a, revealing features such as the Glyph Interface and a transparent rear cover – characteristic of Nothing smartphones. The handset is depicted with a dual rear camera unit and a center-aligned hole-punch slot at the top of the display to accommodate the front camera.

In comparison, the Nothing Phone 2 is equipped with Qualcomm’s 4nm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, boasting a 6.7-inch full-HD LTPO OLED screen. It includes a 4,700mAh battery supporting 45W wired and 5W Qi wireless charging. The dual rear camera setup features a 50-megapixel Sony IMX890 primary sensor and a 32-megapixel front camera.
